MLO 1: Language Proficiency
As part of the Major Learning Outcome 1 (MLO1) as a student I had to communicate effectively in three different modes: interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. The work I have assembled to illustrate the development of MLO 1 is from the following course: Spanish 330 Hispanic Testimonio and is titled “Ataud en Llamas”. In this specific assignment of “Ataud en Llamas” the title is that of the collection of testimonies of writers in Guayaquil, Ecuador who collaborated with each other and recall their memoir of the pandemic and its effect on the city and its people. I selected this specific assignment “Ataud en Llamas” because it helped me comprehend the three areas of the communication modes which, as I previously mentioned, are interpersonal, interpretive and presentational. In the aspect of interpersonal communication, I read the text and how all of the twenty-three writers in Guayaquil exchanged information, ideas, and feelings through emails about their perspective of the pandemic, which was done via emails, phone calls, and texts. All of the testimonios were gathered for 60 days throughout the month of march and april of 2020. I was able to interpret the text by analyzing and interacting with my peers and the professor about their experiences and how things could have been done differently in the testimonios. Lastly, I was given a specific testimonio of the text to analyze and give a presentation about my findings and how I interpreted it. The testimonio I read was about Carlos Luis Ortiz a poet, communicator and professor. His testimonios illustrate his experience in which he relates how the government is absent in helping the city therefore, the city is orphaned. In addition, he talks about how the class is divided by social class in Guayaquil Ecuador. Reading his testimonio I was able to understand and relate to his perspective because I saw the similarities happening in the city I where lived between westernized people and indigenous people. Te challenges remaining as I continue to develop in this area are in the presentational mode. I still need to work on my public speaking aspect. But I know that over time I will have more confidence speaking to my audience.
