MLO 2: Linguists
As part of the Major Learning Outcome 2 (MLO 2) as a student I had to develop fundamental concepts in the fields of Hispanic and Applied Linguistics, and be able to apply them in the completion of research papers and data-driven small-scale research studies pertaining to current issues in these areas. The work I have assembled to illustrate the development of MLO 2 is from the following course: Spanish 303: Advanced Spanish Grammar titled “Esquema del proyecto Final.” In this specific assignment of “Esquema del proyecto Final.” As a student I had learned the components of Spanish grammar. In class we watched a 5 minute video about an interview Pitbull did. Throughout the video me and my team were supposed to identify the subjunctive, ser versus estar, indirect and direct object pronouns, and code switching. I had to identify code switching in Pitbull's interview. After collecting data, me and my team had to write an essay about all of our findings. In addition, from the data collected from the video about code switching I also had to relate to the readings we read in class about code switching and why might Pitbull do code switching. The work I also have assembled is the following in Spanish 345: Bilingualism in the Spanish World titled, “Autobiografia Linguistica.” Bilingualism is the concept of the ability to coexist in two languages. Since my childhood my mother tongues are Mixtec in Spanish and my second language is English. Primary and secondary languages depend on the context I find myself in. Working as an interpreter always acquires information from the parents which region they are from since the Mixtec language can vary which can cause a language barrier. My parents and their experiences are very different when interacting with Spanish. One over went out and learned Spanish while the other depends on others to communicate in Spanish. My experience in bilingualism is different from many Spanish speakers and brings a different perspective from a woman of indigenous roots.
