MLO 5: Cultural Internalization and Language Immersion
The Major Learning Outcome 5 (MLO 5 ) as a student I had immersed myself into an authentic Hispanic cultural and linguistic environment from which I had developed personal understanding and new perspectives of Hispanic communities. The work I have assembled to illustrate the development of MLO 5 is the following course: Spanish 301S: “Service Learning in the Chicanx/ Latinx Community'' are the following: My Service Learning Placement (MySLP): I had partner with Alisal Family Resource Center (AFRC)as a translator for the Mixtec community in Salinas. At the end of my service learning I did an oral presentation based on your service learning experience highlighting what you have learned from your service site. Lastly I did a final reflection using your pre and post taped reflection assignment.I had selected this specific assignment because it highlights my experience doing service learning in the Chicanx/ Latinx Community partnering up with an organization that helps low income indigenous farmworker immigrants with resources in Salinas. Through my service learning, I learned about the importance and relevance of engaging in community matters that invoke justice, compassion, diversity and social responsibility, and help the community to become effective multicultural builders. I was able to engage and offer my services to the community, especially in the Mixteco indigenous community as a translator through the Alisal Family Resource Center (AFRC) on the East side of Salinas. Through the pandemic, many families that were from indigenous communities faced a lot of certainties but were not helped in aspects such as the transition to distance learning. As a translator for the AFRC, I translated between English, Spanish and Mixteco regarding educational matters. The outcome of MLO 5 is illustrated with the Spanish 301S: “Service Learning in the Chicanx/ Latinx Community'' to fulfill the requirement such as providing 30 hours of my service learning to an organization that is helping the Chicano/ Latino population.
